Kraken - Converted FPSO for UK North Sea
Turn-Around & substantial completion of a Major Conversion FPSO
Kraken FPSO is designed and built for the demanding environment and Regulatory requirements of UK North Sea.
Recovered and achieved substantail completion of a severely delayed major FPSO project.
The recovery of the project required the implementation of major strategies to get the project back on a path to successful completion. As a result, the project:
- Rescheduled project based on real project status.
- Reorganized PMT to be delivery focused.
- Expedited completion & delivery of APL turret mooring system for offshore installation.
- Implemented & enforced strong Management of Change (MoC) process.
- Expedited deliveries of all equipment & materials to meet completion targets.
- Implemented a consistent reporting system across the project.
- Expedited lifting and integration of all major topsides modules.
- Implementation of hydro-testing & leak testing.
- Expedited pre-commissioning & commissioning for the FPSO.
- Expedited the bidding, selection & award of all critical contracts.
- Directly managed all teams associated with commercial, contractual, project cash flow, financing, and reporting.

Rosebank - Major FPSO & SubseaField Development for UK North Sea
Execution of fast-track Pre-FEED & FEED of a major offshore field development West of Shetland, UK
The Rosebank field was discovered in 2004 & is located 130km north-west of Shetland Islands in water depth of 1,100m. The Rosebank project is considered to be one of the largest undeveloped fields offshore UK. The design production was 100,000 bopd and produce 80 mmscfd of gas.
Gurin was Project Director for all Pre-FEED & FEED phases.
Major achievements of the Rosebank team are summarized below:
- Successfully executed technical, schedule & cost estimate at all stages of Pre-FEED.
- Successfully executed this major detailed level FEED in a record-setting 12 months.
- Successfully managed a 400personnel FEED team alignment with "One Team approach.
- Ensured the completion & delivery of high-quality FEED Plus deliverables.
- Managed the completion & delivery of detailed EPC schedule & FID cost estimate in line with Chevron requirements.
- Assisted Chevron in the award of major contracts for EPC execution phase.
- Rosebank Project FEED was ranked top three FEED executions in the Chevron portfolio.
Curlew - First UK Safety Case FPSO & Subsea Development in UK
Curlew Field Development - A Record-Setting FPSO Execution
The Curlew Field Development is based on a converted FPSO and subsea production system. It is located in Block 29/7 in the central North Sea, 210km from Aberdeen, Scotland. The Curlew FPSO was designed for offshore UK with production capacities of 45,000 bopd, gas export of 110 mmscfd and storage capacity of 560,000 bbl. It was moored on location via an internal turret supplied by SBM. The EPC scope included not only the FPSO but also the subsea system, flow line and gas export line. The scope include offshore installation, HUC and ongoing Operation & Maintenance for life of field.
The team was responsible for Bidding and Execution of the entire Field Development. Numerous initiatives were implemented on Curlew by the execution team that have since become standard FPSO industry practice. The key achievements on Curlew were and are record setting in the industry :
- Formulated & implemented the MAS Alliance (Maersk, AMEC, SBM) to bid, win, execute and operate the FPSO. This was the first Alliance of its kind for an FPSO Project.
- Curlew "win strategy" was developed to win against highly experienced competitor groups.
- First Safety Case project in UK history and approved by the HSE in record time.
- First leased FPSO field development awarded by Shell Expro.
- The first FPSO where topsides fabrication, vessel conversion, integration, installation & commissioning were executed entirely in the UK.
- Curlew was the first FPSO in the UK to modularize and sub-contract the pipe-rack on an EPC basis.
- The first project completed in 18 months from Project Award to First Production. A record that has not been beaten.
- Originally installed in 1997 the FPSO continued to operate successfully until it was de-commissioned in 2019.
